Day 186 – Suction

I noticed today that the fresh lilies on our dining table had water droplets on the stigma. They must naturally suck water up through their stem like a straw. I’m not sure if this is true, but I can’t think of any other explanation for how the water droplets appeared.

Day 116 – Not a tiger lily

I was just reading an article in National Geographic about the endangerment of tigers. It’s completely irrelevant to this photo (surely my randomness doesn’t surprise anyone by now), but I can’t get it out of my head. Experts have estimated that there are less than 4000 tigers left in the world…and that includes zoo kept tigers as well. Can you imagine a world that no longer has tigers? The biggest of all cats?!? Isn’t this magnificent creature a staple of some sort in most of our cultures? Mascots, Frosted Flakes, alphabet books (T is for Tiger in all the books I remember), golfers, shoes and even airlines. We’ve even named species of other animals and plants after them…tiger prawns, tiger bug, tiger lily. I could go on.
It makes me very sad. And to think that humans are still so greedy, that people actually poach these amazing animals and sell them on the black market…for BIG money. Who buys this type of merchandise?? At what point do we decide that a world without life, is not a world worth living in? What’s going to be left if we never take a stand for anything?
Stepping off soap box. Hope you like the flower 🙂
